Moodle 2.6 issues on Ubuntu 16.04

Hello everyone,

I am not familiar with Linux and I made a mistake when I updated Ubuntu to 16.04 with Moodle 2.6 running on it.  Moodle 2.6 now has admin pages that won’t open.  I know it has to do with php version 7  in 16.04 compared to 5.5 in 14.04.  I did not originally set up my moodle server and I’m finding file locations are not in the default areas according to documentation.  I have been able to find a /var/moodledata folder and /mnt/moodle_backups folders.  I want to try to update to 2.7 and then update to the latest 3.3.  I have downloaded the 2.7 version files and the  33 files to the downloads folder.  I have extracted the moodle 2.7 tgz file to a moodle folder.  I need help installing the 2.7 files so I can then update to 3.3.

Please help.

I did not find the right solution from the internet.
